This weekend I went to Yilan (a city on the north eastern coast of Taiwan). In Yilan (or Ilan) I visited a pencil factory. Why? Because the name of the factory is Rabbit Pencil Factory! Rabbit Pencil Factory is an important manufacturer of stationery in Taiwan, and was actually the first company to produce ballpoint pens in the country. As a result of trade liberalization, most pencil factories in Taiwan have now moved their production lines to China to take advantage of a larger market and cheaper labor. But instead of following this trend, Rabbit Pencil Factory has chosen to stay in Yilan. I’m happy to say that I bought a couple of traditional Rabbit ballpoint pens which I will use at work.
